The likelihood of developing shingles increases with age, with one in three people developing it in their lifetime. Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is a painful blistering skin rash caused by reactivation of the chicken pox virus (Varicella Zoster Virus). Despite recovering from chickenpox, the virus is never completely eradicated from the body. It lay dormant near the spinal cord, and if it ever reactivates it causes shingles.
Vaccination will not only prevent shingles in the vaccinated individual but will also help to reduce the amount of circulating varicella virus in the community.
